Squash Teams

Squash Players Needed

If you are interested in playing squash for the Western teams then do please get in touch.

In the West Open League we have 6 teams. Both male and female players are welcome in these teams although the vast majority are men (just so you know!). Our 6th team is used to expose new players to team sport and so each week two spots are earmarked for new players where possible. This team is in division 5 having won promotion last year.

The the ladies league we have two teams, one in division 1 and one in division 2.

In both situations new players are welcome.

If you are unsure of your standard then do pop down to our social night on a Sunday between 7pm and 9pm where you will meet other players and the club coach Martin Woods.

Regards all

Spinning Music

When playing tennis on court 1-3 and you feel that the music coming from the spinning class is too loud then just ask the instructor to close the door.I actually like having music but if it puts you off your game then please ask them to shut the door.( Door will be shut during colder weather so shouldn't be an issue very soon!)

Better to be flexible as some folk like it and others don't!

Caffe Parma update and other club news!

 Caffe Parma Update
Good news is we now have a potential opening date of 24 August for "Caffe Parma" as it will be called. Thanks so much to Jane Skinner ( club treasurer) and Craig Connelly (Architect) for all their help in finally getting it all done pushing the builders and lawyers to get finished! The idea will be that for the first 2 weeks of opening both the caffe and club bar will be open to give Stefano (Paperinos) a chance to find his feet. After 2 weeks approx we will then close our members area to begin work on our refit and western staff will be assumed by them.
The balcony as you can see is great and we can use for all the good weather we are having! The good moments are wonderful though!
The official grand opening will take place sometime in September with a date to be announced soon for the red carpet affair!
There are a few snagging issues such as the patio area where the hedge used to be. The roots will be removed and the area re paved. Eventually this could become an outside training area but not short term.
The opening in the hedge will be filled with a decorative steel frame which will not only look good but will also allow passers by to see what is going on!
The mini tennis court will be re painted and the entire area power washed shortly.
We still have to put up new signage and this will be done in conjunction with Caffe Parma to present a stylish front to the public.

Western Tennis Club are delighted to announce they are organising another Celebrity Tennis Event on 6th June 2015. This year we will again be raising money for The Elena Baltacha Tennis Foundation (http://www.ebatuk.org/elena-baltacha-foundation/) and also for Playlist for Life http://www.playlistforlife.org.uk. We will also be making a donation towards research into the rare form of dementia that is affecting well known Scottish tennis player Malcolm Watt who has defied doctors’ expectations by continuing to play since diagnosis. Malcolm will also participate in the event as one of our “pros”.

We are also very excited that Judy Murray and Sally Magnusson will be in attendance on the day to talk about the respective charities. Judy is a patron of EBAT and Sally is a co founder of Playlist for Life.

The format of the day is as follows:

2 pm: doors open

230 - 430 pm: FREE tennis coaching for kids and adults, speed of serve competition and beat the pro! Plus plenty of time to get your raffle tickets. Food and drink will also be on sale kindly donated by Paperinos (Cafe Parma) with all profits going to our charities.).

5 - 6 pm: take your seats for our Celebrity Tennis Event starring Greg Hemphill, Julie Hemphill, Alan Rough, Sanjeev Kohli, Kaye Adams, Judith Ralston, Alison Walker, Ian McCall and Paul English

6 - 7 pm: Auction and raffle. Judy Murray and Sally Magnusson will speak.

7pm onwards: stay on and enjoy some tunes with us courtesy of Andy Lowndes. What’s on your Playlist for life?

Last year, we raised over £10,000 for our nominated good causes. Please join us in trying to double that amount this year!

Cafe Parma Update (and free tasting)

The building work is almost completed with the glass surround for the balcony being fitted this week and the boards at the front will finally come down!

This will allow us to use the new steps and tidy up the patio area plus have some use of our new balcony before Cafe Parma opens after their fit out. Late summer we hope for the official opening.

Another free food/wine tasting (at Paperinos - Byres Road) for all members and friends this Wednesday any time from 6-9pm. Very informal in that you come and go as you please. The food last Wednesday was amazing so hope some more people can attend this week.

Sad News

Sorry to pass on the news of the passing of 2 previous club presidents who both died recently.

Both Donnie Campbell and Donald McLachlan will be remembered by many of our long standing members with great affection. Their contribution to the club over many years was greatly appreciated and I'm sure they will be sorely missed by family and friends.

Donald McLachlan's funeral will be at the Falkirk crematorium this Thursday at 1pm.

No date has been set for the funeral of Donnie Campbell as there will be a post mortem on June 3rd.

Tuesday 19 May 2015

How Andy Murray beat Nadal in Madrid

Purely and simply Andy played great tennis and any moments where it looked like Nadal was finding his way back into the match he was stopped in his tracks by some clever, aggressive tennis.
For me the most important point of the match was the one after Andy missed a drive volley to secure a double break. It could have been a huge momentum swing but Andy on the next point took charge and cleaned the line with a massive forehand down the line!

Andy won 85% of his 2nd serves by serving almost always to the Nadal forehand , the first time he has employed this tactic which seemed to throw Nadal off especially on the deuce side as he was strangely wrong footed fairly often and then had no angle for the return so Andy could stay in the middle of the court and dominate the point.

I thought that Murray’s ability to switch heights and pace never allowed Nadal to settle whereas in previous matches Murray has employed a more consistent attacking style of play which on a clay court can be very difficult with little margin for error.

I’ve always believed that clay should be a great surface for Murray as he has so much variety to his game but adding more variety of spins and height over the net from both sides combined with his pile drivers at the right time are now making him an awesome force on the red stuff. Oh and yes he has now improved his ball toss so he can hit better serves!

All in, a truly wonderful performance which must make Murray feel like he has a real chance at Rolland Garros.

Yes Nadal may not be at his best just yet but I wouldn’t write him off for the French Open as a 5 set match allows him time to find his feet as he has shown 9 out of 10 times!

Clay Court Training
Really looking forward to Sicily next week for a clay court special hosted week in Trapani with a great group of 16 players who will hopefully be inspired by Andy Murray!
If you would like to learn to play on the red stuff this summer why not join us in Lucca or Florence where we still have some spaces.

Food and drink will also be on sale.
On a final note, if you would like to help, please email juliegtennis@gmail.com. We need help on the day but also in the lead up to organise prizes, raffles, auctions, social media, ticketing etc etc. It would be great to hear from you even if you only have a couple of hours to spare. We are also looking for event sponsors to cover costs like hire of the stand.

Save the date - Saturday 6th June 2015 - Celebrity Tennis Charity Event
Ian and Julie will be organising another celebrity tennis event on 6th June 2015. This year, we will again be raising money for The Elena Baltacha Tennis Foundation and also for a local Alzheimer's charity, http://www.playlistforlife.org.uk.
Playlist for Life was founded by Sally Magnusson who will come along to speak about the work it does connecting people, memories and music. Facing each other on the court will be Kaye Adams, Judith Ralston, Sanjeev Kohli, Dougie Vipond and Alison Walker with other names to be confirmed.
Because music is central to this charity, we will be extending our event this year to include some musical entertainment also.
Last year , we raised over £10,000 for the EBTF and MacMillan Cancer Care. Both were extremely grateful for our donations and assure us they have put the money to good use. . This was the first such event Western had organised and it felt great to be able to contribute to two such worthy causes. There were also great benefits for the club. Although it was a huge undertaking, it gave us a wonderful opportunity to connect with the local community and to bring club members together.
On that note, if you would like to help, please email juliegtennis@gmail.com. We need help on the day but also in the lead up to organise prizes, raffles, auctions, social media, ticketing etc etc. It would be great to hear from you even if you only have a couple of hours to spare! We are also looking for event sponsors to cover costs like hire of the stand. Again contact juliegtennis@gmail if you're interested in getting involved.
