Rally for Bally 2016 - Saturday 4th June 1 pm till late

We are getting ready for our annual Rally for Bally event. Last year we raised almost £15,000 thanks in no small part to your generous donation to our raffle and auction.

We are very grateful to Vanilla Square who have come on board as our main sponsor this year so that every penny we make on the day can go straight to the charities.

This year we are raising money for Elena Baltacha Foundation, Playlist for Life (Sally Magnusson's dementia charity) and also Cancer Support Scotland (based at Gartnavel Hospital).

We have a day of fun filled activities planned from 1pm including live music, interviews with Sally Magnusson and friends about their playlists and then our usual tennis fun with confirmed players so far:

"BBC Burds": Kaye Adams, Sally Magnusson and Judith Ralston

"Sporting Heroes": Ian McCall, Alan Rough and commentator Alison Walker

and our very own River City superstar, Sanjeev Kohli

as well as free coaching and tennis challenges throughout the day.

Tickets are on sale via www.jumblebee.co.uk/rallyforbally2016. Tickets are £15 for adults and £10 for children and the ticket price includes food from our on site restaurant, Caffe Parma.

It would be great if you could spread the word about this great event and if you were able to contribute to our raffle or auction then please get in touch.

Best wishes and many thanks,

Julie Gordon

Tennis Season

The tennis season is kicking off this Friday night so please check google calendar HERE to check tennis court availability. There are occasions where all 6 courts are being used. We try to avoid this wherever possible. But this Friday night for example, from 630, all 6 courts will be used.

We would also encourage you to come down and support the teams. There are lots of great matches on and now with the balcony in operation and the sun shining, there's nothing stopping us!

Sponsorship required

We are looking for a sponsor to help us with the Rally for Bally Charity event on Saturday 4th June. The sponsorship requited is to cover the cost of hiring the stand and PA system for the event. We are about to start our PR for the event so opportunity for sponsors to be mentioned and have a lot of visibility in our marketing of this event. Please contact Julie on 07910126452 or email juliegtennis@gmail.com if you want to have a chat about this.

Special Events Saturday 2nd and Sunday 3rd April

This weekend Julie is organising two special events with Ridwan Pfluger (one of the tennis coaches at Western). Ridwan is a tennis ambassador at St Andrews University and is raising money to help children in Zambia (more about the project below). All the funds raised from the weekend's events will go towards the project in Zambia.

N.B.: ALL events are for ALL abilities from adult group coaching/ social tennis/ team players and green/yellow ball juniors. Players will be organised in ability groups by the coaches so don't worry, just come along!

Please text Julie 07910 126 452 to register your place or with any questions!

Saturday 2nd April:

2 - 330 pm: Fun coaching and drills (£5)
330 - 5 pm: American Tournament (£5)

Sunday 3rd April:

5 - 8 pm: Doubles PRO - AM Tournament (Donation of £5 suggested)

Team players and social players invited along for a PRO AM event. You will be placed into two teams. Each team will have a mixture of team and social players. Matches will be played against the opposing team in a mixture of PRO - AM/ PRO - PRO/ AM - AM formats.

N.B. This event will replace social tennis this week.

A word from Ridwan:

I need to raise money for a project I have organised as the tennis ambassador for the uni club. We'll be heading out to Lusacka where we'll be coaching tennis to large groups of kids at the Olympic Youth Development Centre alongside Zambia's no.1 player. We will also be doing work at the national sports centre coaching children as well. Any donations will help us make a difference to the lives of the children in Zambia by introducing them to new sports and new ways to learn these sports. Any excess money made will be used to help improve the community. A past project used the money to buy a kitchen for a school so they could provide lunches.

Thank you for all your support in advance.

Tennis Team Matches:

The tennis season is now underway and all the home matches have been entered into the google calendar. Please check the calendar if you want to know when the courts are going to be busy.

Happy New Year

Squash Club Champs 2016
Hi all and a happy new year!

It’s that time of year again, a time for the start of the squash competitions.

Last year I organised 4 competitions, an open entry (main and plate) and a Ladies only (main and plate). I intend to do the same again with the addition of a veteran’s competition but more about the vets later.

The issue at the moment is how people enter for the 4 main competitions.  Last year, for the first time, I experimented with an opt out rather than an opt in system.  In other words I asked the regular players to decline entry otherwise they would be entered.  On the whole this worked well in that participation was better than previous years.  The danger is that too many players are entered but then do not play and I really don’t want that to happen.

The process this year is as follows:

FOR WESTERN TEAM PLAYERS
You will be entered automatically unless you request not to be so by replying to this email. It really isn’t a problem if you do not want to play but you must opt out unless you want to play.

FOR SOCIAL PLAYERS
You need to email me to enter.
 geoff.cordwell@me.com

To play in these competitions you merely have to be a member of the club.

I will organise the draw and publish the same by Monday next week (11th January) so please do not delay!

There is a modest entry fee of £4 and for that you should get a minimum of two games.  The entry fee will be collected through the club admin court booking system and details of how to do this will follow when the entry list is finalised.

Regards all

Geoff
Squash Convenor and occasional player
